Mediaset Cuts Dividend as 2011 Profit Drops on Lower Revenue

Mediaset SpA (MS), the broadcaster
controlled by former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi,
cut its dividend after full-year profit dropped more than
estimated by analysts on lower advertising sales.

Net income fell 36 percent to 225 million euros, the Milan-
based company said in a statement today. Sales declined 1
percent to 4.25 billion euros. Analysts estimated net income of
250 million euros on sales of 4.28 billion euros, according to a
Bloomberg survey.

Mediaset, which runs free-to-air and pay-TV channels that
compete with the network of state-owned RAI SpA and Rupert Murdoch’s Sky Italia Srl, has been hit by declining advertising
sales amid the European sovereign debt crisis. Italy and Spain,
where the company controls Mediaset Espana Comunicacion SA (TL5), are
both struggling with high debt and unemployment. The broadcaster
today proposed a dividend of 0.10 euros per share compared with
0.35 euros a year earlier.

“The financial solidity of the company is the first
priority,” Chief Financial Officer Marco Giordani said on a
conference call today when asked about the dividend cut.

The company said it can’t make accurate predictions about
the development of advertising sales this year because of the
continuing economic uncertainty.

“The group’s results in 2011 obviously reflect the
difficult international economic situation,” the company said.
“The recessionary phase currently affecting both Italy and
Spain is affecting the advertising market in both the geographic
areas in which the Group operates.”

Rising Unemployment

Italy’s jobless rate rose to the highest in more than a
decade in January as austerity measures meant to fight the debt
crisis helped push the euro area’s third-largest economy into a
recession. Unemployment increased to 9.2 in January, the highest
since March 2001, from 8.9 percent in December, Rome-based
national statistics institute Istat said in a March 1 report.

Mediaset said 2012 net income will be lower than last
year’s if market conditions don’t improve. The company plans
savings of 250 million euros by 2014 to reduce operating costs
“in all major business areas.”

Total ad sales, which include domestic unit Publitalia, pay
digital channels and video content on Mediaset’s website,
dropped 3.3 percent to 2.77 billion euros in 2011. Revenue at
pay-TV offering Premium rose 14 percent to 615.6 million euros.

Before the full-year earnings were announced, Mediaset rose
0.2 percent to 2.298 euros in Milan trading.

LookSmart Announces Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2011 Financial Results

, an online search advertising network solutions company, today announced financial results for the fourth quarter and full year ended December 31, 2011.

Revenues for the fourth quarter of 2011 were $5.3 million, compared to $9.9 million in the fourth quarter of 2010 and $7.4 million in the third quarter of 2011. Net loss for the fourth quarter of 2011 was $1.8 million, or $0.11 per diluted share. This compares to a net income for the fourth quarter of 2010 of $0.1 million, or $0.01 per diluted share. Net loss for the third quarter of 2011 was $0.2 million, or $0.01 per diluted share.

Loss from continuing operations for the fourth quarter of 2011 was $1.8 million. This compares to an income from continuing operations in the fourth quarter of 2010 of $31,000. Loss from continuing operations for the third quarter of 2011 was $0.2 million.

For the full year 2011, revenues were $27.6 million, compared to $47.5 million in 2010. Gross margin improved to 45% in 2011, compared to 39% in 2010. Loss from continuing operations in 2011 was $2.5 million, compared to income of $0.6 million in 2010. Net loss in 2011 was $2.5 million, or $0.15 per diluted share, compared to a net income of $1.0 million, or $0.06 per diluted share in 2010.

Commenting on the results, Dr. Jean-Yves Dexmier, Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer said, “Our largest group of customers is comprised of intermediaries who purchase clicks from us and sell them into the affiliate network of the large search engine providers. In the fourth quarter, several customers were charged back with very significant settlements for traffic quality, a large portion of which was unrelated to LookSmart. Some customers discontinued their affiliate network business model and our revenue was impacted accordingly. Our net results were further negatively affected by receivable reserves related to those intermediaries whose credit worthiness has been severely impacted by this matter.”

Dr. Dexmier continued, “The intermediary business model experienced a significant change in the fourth quarter. We have ceased business with several of our intermediary customers and do not expect significant future revenue growth in this area. Our future growth will come largely from direct search advertisers, self-service search advertisers and other digital advertising models under development.”

Revenues from the Company’s Advertiser Network were $4.9 million in the fourth quarter of 2011, a decrease of 48% from $9.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2010 and a decrease of 30% from $7.0 million in the third quarter of 2011. Revenues from the Company’s Publisher Solutions were $0.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2011, a decrease of 20% from $0.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2010 and an increase of 33% from $0.3 million in the third quarter of 2011.

Gross margin from continuing operations increased to 45% in the fourth quarter of 2011 from 40% in the fourth quarter of 2010, and increased from 43% in the third quarter of 2011. Total operating expenses in the fourth quarter of 2011 were $4.2 million, which includes $0.1 million of non-cash, stock-based compensation. Operating expenses for the fourth quarter of 2010 were $3.9 million, which includes $0.1 million of non-cash, stock-based compensation charges. Operating expenses for the third quarter of 2011 were $3.4 million, which includes $0.1 million of non-cash, stock-based compensation charges.

Non-GAAP net loss (net income (loss) before discontinued operations and excluding stock-based compensation) for the fourth quarter of 2011 was $1.7 million compared to a non-GAAP net income of $0.2 million in the fourth quarter of 2010. Non-GAAP net loss for the third quarter of 2011 was $0.1 million.

An explanation of LookSmart’s use of non-GAAP financial measures, including the limitations of such measures relative to GAAP measures and reconciliation between GAAP and non-GAAP measures where appropriate, is included later in this release.

Capital expenditures, including capitalization of internally developed software, in the fourth quarter of 2011 were $0.3 million, compared to $0.3 million in the fourth quarter of 2010, and $0.2 million in the third quarter of 2011. Depreciation and amortization from continuing operations in the fourth quarter of 2011 was $0.6 million, compared to $0.7 million for the fourth quarter of 2010 and $0.6 million for the third quarter of 2011.

The Company ended the year with $24.8 million in cash, cash equivalents, and investments, compared to $26.9 million at December 31, 2010 and $25.6 million at September 30, 2011. Net cash used in operating activities for the three months ended December 31, 2011 was approximately $0.02 million.

Television’s Catch-22: Tough Choices For TV, Easy Choices For Advertisers

2012 promises to be the most tumultuous year ever in TV media buying as digital video gives advertisers more choices and TV networks more competition. More than 40% of the total advertising
expenditures in the United States are focused on traditional television. Can the TV industry delay the full impact of digital video?

It’s time for marketers to break free of the peculiar
and self-defeating rules of TV advertising and make smart investments into digital video ad formats on a genre-by-genre basis.

A framework for understanding absurdity

Joseph Heller was a young writer from USC who was trained in advertising and possessed a strong grasp of the absurd, sometimes contradictory, societal rules. In many ways, his landmark
novel “Catch-22characterizes the dilemma for traditional marketing executive attempting to succeed in the modern TV industry.

“Catch-22made popular the phrase that refers
to a situation in which contradictory constraints force you to choose from no-win scenarios. The novel is about a fictional Air Force squadron fighting Mussolini off the coast of Italy in World War
II. The main characters are young pilots named Yossarian and Orr who are entangled in absurd Air Force regulations as shown in this passage:

“There was only one catch and that was Catch-22,
which specified that a concern for one’s safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy, and could be grounded. All he had to do was
ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions… “

Yossarian eventually discerns that “Catch-22 does not actually exist, but
because the military claims it does, and the world believes it does, the result is complete adherence to the rule. The absence of proof of the rule’s existence actually causes its own
enforcement.

Modern television — the ultimate Catch-22

You can find the sequel to “Catch-22 in the world of modern television.

The rule of TV advertising says that you must use television to maximize reach, frequency, recall and impact. If you break this rule, you are insane. But if you are sane, you spend your
advertising dollars in a way that maximizes the return on investment. Doing so would mean shifting the vast majority of your advertising dollars to measurable video display media, which means
you’ve broken the rule of TV, which means you are insane.

In order to grow profits, TV executives must convince brands to pay for advertising ahead of a TV show’s actual
airing, while guaranteeing stars enormous paydays ahead of ad revenue. The only way brands can justify paying ahead of time is to believe rule. As if to take their cue from”Catch-22 ,”
the brands obey the rule, and the absence of statistical evidence  provides for its own enforcement.

That cycle of absurdity is being broken. It only feels like TV is
holding its ground against YouTube and Hulu because digital video is taking audience share away from TV gradually, one genre at a time — instead of a sweeping change that is easier to notice.
Statistics tell us digital is stealing audiences from television. I’ve ranked the principal TV genres from top to bottom, with No. 1 on the list being the most immediately affected by digital
video and No. 7 the least:

2. Comedy
3. Sci-Fi/Fantasy
4. Lifestyle/Talk
5. Drama
6. Reality
7. Sports

Now let’s take a look
at why I’ve ranked them this way.

NEWS — The revolution will not be televised

News will be the first category to see the vast majority of its
traditional advertising dollars move to digital news outlets in the short term.

Fox News Channel and CNN remain strong with Americans over 50 and the advertisers that chase them. But
these older viewers will not be replaced by the generations immediately younger. Younger viewers won’t abandon the news because they never watched it in the first place. They watch clips from
The Daily Show or theonion.com. Or, they simply got a constant flow of text messages or blog postings.

Take a look at the sample of average viewership during the lucrative
morning show timeslots between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. January numbers for morning news shows, a cash cow for television:

Television-Chart

Those are tiny
numbers relative to viewership on the Web. YouTube eclipses all the major networks combined during the coveted 7:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. dayparts, and I estimate that 50 million of the 4 billion YouTube
views per day (about 10%) happen in the morning slots of all times zones in the United States.

At the height of the Arab Spring, YouTube hit 135 million unique viewers per month, and at
its current growth rate, YouTube may reach 500 million monthly unique viewers, or a Super Bowl audience each week, by the end of 2012.

Comedy – The really funny stuff will
be online

Comedy used to be a gold mine for the networks and syndicators. Inexpensive to produce and universally appealing, comedy shows attracted droves of advertisers that
paid premium prices. But then production costs got out of hand with the historic contract extension of “Friends” paying $22 million per cast member in 2002, only to be topped by Charlie Sheen’s
deal for $1.2 million per episode for 24 episodes of “Two and a Half Men.” All of this was ad supported with little or no ability to connect media expenditures directly to revenues.

High
production costs have become disconnected from ad revenue, and that’s unsustainable. The industry has been acting on instinct, placing bets on expensive talent and selling advertisers on
emotion, before it is clear a statistically measurable large audience will be watching.

Led by YouTube, digital video is going to reorder the economic model, connecting ad revenue
directly to performance. Comedy shows may one day be produced one show at a time with production costs paid directly as a percentage of the media spend. Talent would no longer be guaranteed a big
payday, but the overall payout could be much larger if they agreed to take a percentage of total ad buying.

With its relatively low production requirements, the comedy genre will
translate easily to the Web. “Lazy Sunday,” JibJab, “Fred” and now “Annoying Orange” spawned millions of comedy producers who now deal only in digital formats. A
digital version of Lorne Michaels is inevitable, and we will soon see a sustainable multi-year comedy franchise on the Web. Soon, advertising revenue for TV sitcom will be surpassed by video display
advertising revenue for comedy on Hulu, YouTube, et al.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy – It takes a little imagination

With the cancellation of “V” on ABC and “The
Event” on NBC, it’s increasingly clear that TV will struggle to create another “Star Trek” or “The X-Files.” The sci-fi genre just feels right in the motion picture format, and advertisers might
do better to buy audiences for MMOG (multiplayer online games), blogs and social hames to get their messages across to sci-fi/fantasy fans. However, syndication-heavy channels like NBC’s SyFy
will do well in the short-term because serial science fiction hits make good reruns.

Lifestyle/Talk – Keep talking

The legends are leaving: first,
Larry King and then, Oprah. Who knows how long Ellen will stay interested, and now anyone can clearly become a very important, bold-faced name without appearing on “Charlie Rose.” The genre had a good

Rae says Tory attacks are ‘character assassination’

Interim Liberal Leader Bob Rae says that a new Tory ad attacking his record as former Ontario premier is an attempt to “change the channel” amid the ongoing robocalls electoral scandal.

The ad, released on the same day as another TV spot that praises Prime Minister Stephen Harper, criticizes Rae and states that his tenure as NDP Ontario premier was a “failure.”

But Rae told CTV’s Power Play Monday that he expected as much from the Conservatives, since “they’ve turned character assassination into a way of life.”

“I knew perfectly well what the Tories were going to do,” said Rae, who has never announced his intention to become full-time Liberal leader.

“Look, I’m the interim leader, I do take it as a compliment.”

In the attack ad, Rae is chuckling as the narrator describes him as a premier who introduced Ontario to the “most job losses since the depression, the highest income taxes in North America, the biggest deficit Ontario has ever had.”

The ad’s release, coming while the Conservatives enjoy majority status and with an election several years away, at the earliest, may suggest the Conservatives see Rae as more of a threat than NDP interim leader Nycole Turmel, whom they have largely ignored.

The Conservatives launched similar campaigns against previous Liberal leaders such as Michael Ignatieff and Stephane Dion.

But Rae said that engaging in such blatant attacks simply turns voters off about the entire political process.

“Public opinion on its own will deal with the Tories,” Rae predicted. He also pointed to the robocalls scandal and its implication of dirty tricks, noting that it will “only get worse” for the Conservatives.

“They are obviously trying to change the channel,” Rae said.

Meanwhile, Rae said a prolonged recession in the early 90s was a hallmark of his tenure as Ontario premier, and he said that blaming him for the recession would be like crediting him with the Toronto Blue Jays winning the World Series in 1992 and 1993.

“It’s just as logical as blaming me for effect of the recession.”

Rae stressed that the Liberals would respond to the latest Conservative ad, but would refrain from crass political attacks.

“The question is how you play the game,” he said. “You can’t simply let them define the entire political landscape of the country.”

But Immigration Minister Jason Kenney defended the ads, saying Rae has made it clear he wants to be prime minister, and Canadians have a right to know his political record.

“He is acting like he’s the permanent leader, and he has a record that hangs around his neck like a millstone,” Kenney told Power Play.

“A lot of people don’t know, and quite frankly, it’s 20 years ago in Ontario. There’s a lot of new people in Canada, a lot of younger voters who have no memory of the complete disaster (and) the economic wasteland that was Bob Rae’s Ontario,” said Kenney.

Earlier, Kenney denied the Conservatives were attempting to interfere in the Liberal Party’s leadership process.

When Rae took on the role as interim leader he agreed not to run for the party leadership — a party policy, but one that some have suggested might be flexible.

Rae is the interim leader of the third-place Liberals, a party that was decimated in the last election while the NDP made massive gains under Jack Layton’s leadership, mostly in Quebec.

ALL of the provinces increased their deficits while the Mulroney Conservatives formed the Federal government. Conservative Federal governments download debt to the Provinces. When Trudeau left office in 1984 aggregate Provincial Government debt was 24 %GDP. From 1984 until 1992, while Mulroney was in office, aggregate Provincial Government debt increased 37 %GDP by 1992. From 1993 to 2006, under the Chretien and Martin Liberals, aggregate Provincial Government debt increased from 37 %GDP to 42 %GDP. When Harper took office aggregate Provincial debt was 42% GDP, and now it is 50 %GDP. In fact, on an annual basis, the Harper Conservatives are downloading debt to the Provinces as fast a Mulroney did.

Bob Rae was Premier from 90-95 during which time Ontario ended up in its worst recession since the Depression, from which it has never fully recovered. Mike Harris didn’t come into office until ’95, and despite all the criticism he still receives he did win two consecutive majorities. Even though its been 9 years since the Liberals took over they still haven’t changed back anything Harris did that they claim to oppose. I don’t like attack ads in general, especially when its not an election year, but I do see where they’re going with this one. Knowing what he did to Ontario, I wouldn’t trust him leading the country either.

For those of you who say taxpayer dollars don’t go to these ads, you are wrong. Indirectly all donations result in a political donation receipt which reduces a persons taxes. If there are not enough dollars to pay for services its either cuts or increased taxes, so these do impact the tax payer. I have no problem with political ads taking an opponent to task for his or her track record. Everything in this ad is true, so it’s a perfectly fair contribution to the discussion Canadians should always be having about their leaders. And of course, if the Liberals want to issue an ad about Stephen Harper’s track record, so be it.

People who think this is some kind of Conservative campain spree should be aware that the Rae/Liberals have launched a huge campain in Toronto recently. “We’re listening/changing/blah blah blah” billboards, posters and e-ads are everywhere. The real question should be; after the abhorrent showing in the last election, how can the Liberals afford to be campaining at this time? Who is funding them? Who has the financial clout to start campaining for a crippled party 3 years before the next possible election? In other words: who are the Liberals selling themselves to this time around?

Bob Rae was totally against North American Free Trade – was totally not interested in keeping Ontario workers in good paying jobs and in the end made a mess of everything, and walked away with a Million Dollars in his pocket when he left the NDP Ontario Party, not too many get to do this. Anxious to hear Adam Carrol into Committee it will be an eye opener for sure who else is involved besides himself, as there would be no other reason for him to put off being interviewed by Committee on the Vikileaks. The Anonymous with the masks on are quite funny during this time because when you hit the link it goes right into the Liberal Website was on Sun News (with the big eye) we have our eye on you…hmmm wonder what that means…

People complain about attack ads like this, but I’ve got to hand it to the Conservatives. Every single one they put out cites known facts from from unbiased sources, like this one does. If people are angry about it, they should at least admit they’re angry because the ads tell the truth. It is true that Bob Rae did these things, and it’s important for Canadians to know that and ask hard questions of anyone who wants to be PM.
